Mindfulness and Modeling Behavior.

Children are always watching us for cues and it is how they learn to maneuver the world. It's clear in this sweet video from Jaws that Chief Brody is being mindful even when he is stressed. Check it out.

Please join us on Tuesdays at 6:45pm for Head & Heart Parenting, a lesson in mindfulness for parents so that we can teach the skills to our children.

Glitter Glue Art!

Last week at Sweet Dreams Story Makers we made glitter glue art. Just drizzle glue on paper, fold and press, and open it up to see what happens. This activity strenghtens tiny hand muscles by squeezing the glue bottles and it develops fine motor skills when we encourage the child to gently hold the ends of the paper to open it up. It develops literacy skills as we engage in conversations and stories about the art. Is it a bug? A butterfly? An umbrella? Why do you think that? What happens if we add more paint? Let's do another. Parents and children participated together in this activity for a half an hour. It took me a while to wipe the glitter glue off the tables, but it was worth it. -Lisa

Friday it was Boxes and Boxes and the children who attended M Is For Museum at Wenham Museum got creative. M Is For Museum meets the second Friday of each month, for children ages 2.9+, and it is FREE if you register through Early Childhood Partners/CFCE, your local Massachusetts Coordinated Family & Community Engagement grantee. Help! We need boxes, paper towel rolls, bottles, egg crates, and more. Can you help?

Will you help us?  We need recycling for a big STEM build at Hamilton-Wenham Library on Monday morning.  Here is a picture from a previous year. Not only did she design & build this structure, she went home and built for the rest of the day!
Picture
These kids may be toddlers and pre-k students in town, but on Monday they are going to be engineers!

If you can donate any boxes, paper towel rolls (no toilet paper rolls, please), plastic bottles, yogurt cups....anything that would otherwise go in the recycling bin, please bring it to the Hamilton-Wenham Library Children's Room, anytime, on Thursday 7/21, Friday 7/22, or Saturday 7/23.

If you are coming to Little Explorers on Monday, please feel free to bring as much as your little one and yourself can carry!

Any questions, please email me at e.cheney@hwschools.net or call 978-468-5489.
Thank you! -Lisa

A note from local Dad, Jason L., about Dad's Night Out!

Picture
Gentlemen, please join me for an opportunity to get together and get to know each other while our children ages 0-5 play under our watchful eye!

Moms, you can join us and sit off to the side in lawn chairs. It's a win-win! Tired moms can socialize and share tips, while dads can do the same while the kids play together. I don't know about you, but it comes across as a surprise often when a dad spends time with his child alone and has fun! Let's get some like minded dads together who value this time with their children and also rarely have any time for the "guys." I hope to see you there. Let's set the standard for dads who love to play!

-Jason L (Wenham, MA) dad to Emma Grace

The next Dad's Night Out is on Friday, 7/15, at Patton Park on Bay Road, Hamilton, from 5:15pm to 6:45pm. Participation is FREE! Click on the picture of Jason & Emma Grace to learn more. Bring blankets, toys, a snack, and come and hang out. This is a drop-in and casual gathering, but if you think you will make it, please give us a shout out on the blog, Facebook, or Twitter. This group is new and we could use your help in getting the word out!  Dad's Night Out is a lead by Local Dad's, and coordinated with the assistance of Early Childhood Partners, and the Hamilton-Wenham Recreation Department.

What is STEM? STEAM?

For the past few weeks I have been working with our partners to get ready for summer STEM/STEAM playgroups. Naturally, I am often asked, "So, what exactly is STEM?" and "What is STEAM? How is that different from STEM?"

STEM is an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. It becomes STEAM when we add the "A", for Arts.  We group these areas together because they are intertwined in how we understand the world. It is a process and it is a way of thinking.

The other question I get is, "Really, for toddlers and Pre-K children?"

The answer is YES!  Young children are natural scientists. Even the littlest babies are constantly exploring and experimenting.

Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge.-Carl Sagan

Around age three children begin to develop science process skills such as the ability predict, observe, describe, categorize, generalize, and make connections that relate to prior and current experiments.

On top of all of that, STEM/STEAM experiences are fun and support learning for young children for so many reasons!
  • Young brains, between ages 1 and 4, are responsive to learning math and logic.
  • Our children's future in the 21st century is based on information and a knowledge-based economy.
  • Children begin to understand the world around them. This helps with all learning, including language.

The STEM/STEAM classes are going to be a blast and I am really excited! Below you can learn more about what to expect by viewing the cute
handout we are using to accompany our STEM/STEAM themed playgroups this summer. Each child will receive a copy of I Am A Scientist! as a leaflet for you to take home and explore. They will also receive a blank notebook & crayons so that together you can record their observations. Asking questions, talking about the world, and recording it (even if you do the recording) is a natural way to foster your child's language and literacy skills.
